#LT19uk - York Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust

Updated: Dec 13, 2019

Steph Wild, LMS Manager at York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust will be speaking at Learning Technologies 2019 at ExCel London about their Totara Learn implementation from contract award in 2013, and their experience to date (2019).

York Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust has 9,500 staff based across 3,400 square miles of countryside. In 2013 their Directors wanted a fresh start with a modern LMS, needing robust reporting that would provide engagement with the workforce.

Staff didn't want another username and password, they wanted simplicity, they didn't want to repeat training that they felt competent in already, direct access to training records and wanted that courses were blended and a system that was easy to access.

In 2013, through a rigorous tendering exercise, they agreed to implement Totara Learn with Chambury Learning Solutions as their selected partner. Implementation included integration with Active Directory for single sign on, synchronicity with their Intranet so staff felt it wasn't another system, full migration of training records from their existing LMS [NHS OLM], development of learning plans and new course material development.

At go live, all staff got access at the same time, with links from the intranet and weekly bulletins. Easy to follow instructions were added to the majority of screens, and Knowledge Assessments incorporated into all appropriate courses. Reporting was also made live.

Managers were consulted for any paper based records that were not on the legacy LMS and migrated across, and to check their team's records for any inconsistencies.

Average compliance before go live was 51.2%, 67.6% after 6 months and 88.3% after 5 years. Using Totara Learn saves the Trust over £100,000 per year.

Meet Steph Wild, LMS Manager at Learning Technologies 2019 in London, and at the Totara European Customer Conference in London May 2019.

Steph's background is in the NHS where she has worked for 35 years, the last 23 years being in learning and development. She has delivered training, developed training programmes for large groups of staff and managed organisation wide programmes of learning. She has also successfully managed the implementation of an organisation wide learning management system (Totara Learn) which has transformed how and where staff undertake learning as well as providing transparent compliancy monitoring. She has since expanded the use of this system to record appraisal completions and areas where staff can develop their skills to improve their career prospects.
